Loft boarding

A boarded floor raised clear over the insulation, plus a hatch and ladder where there is not one already.

Common questions

Will it affect my insulation?

Not if it is raised, which is how we do it. The legs screw to the top face of the joists so the insulation stays at full depth in the bays underneath. Boarding straight onto the joists crushes it and costs you the performance you paid for.

How much weight will it take?

Household storage, not a room. Ceiling joists are sized to hold up a ceiling, not to carry a floor. If you want a usable room that is a loft conversion, which is a different job and a different trade.

Can you fit a ladder and a bigger hatch?

Yes, and they are commonly done at the same time. Enlarging a hatch usually means cutting a joist, which has to be trimmed properly rather than simply cut, so it is worth doing together.

What about downlights and cables?

They get checked first. Downlights need clearance above them and cables should not be buried under insulation or boarding. If we find something that is not right up there we will tell you, even though it is not what you called about.

How long does it take?

A typical loft is a day. Awkward access, a trussed roof, or enlarging the hatch adds to it, and you will know which before we start.
