Common questions

Do I need planning permission for a porch?

Often not, but it depends on the floor area, the height, and how close it sits to a boundary or a highway. A listed building or a conservation area changes the answer completely. We will tell you what we think applies, and you confirm it with the council before anything is ordered.

Why has the oak cracked?

Those are shakes and they are entirely normal. Green oak dries out across the first couple of years and splits along the grain as it goes. It does not weaken the frame, and it is exactly why the joints are pegged rather than glued or bolted.

Will it go grey?

Yes, if it is left alone, and a lot of people want precisely that. A UV oil keeps it honey coloured but it needs redoing every few years. Decide before it goes up, because treating a frame on the ground is far easier than treating one over your front door.

How long is it on site?

The frame itself usually goes up in a day or two once it has been cut. The groundwork for the padstones has to be done and set first, and the roof, tiling and making good take longer than the frame does.

Can you match it to the house?

The roof pitch, the tile and the way it meets the wall all get set to suit what is already there. Send a photo of the front of the house with your enquiry and we can tell you a good deal before we arrive.
